The Hydraulic Engineering in Coastal Areas department of the BAW advises the WSD North and WSD Northwest among others in the context of fairway design with regard to adapting the shipping channels to large vessels (e.g. Lower and Outer Elbe river, Lower Weser river, Outer Weser river, also the approaches to Stralsund and the Peenestrom). Today the results of ship handling simulations are of considerable relevance to the decision-making processes involved in the definitive stipulation of fairway dimensions. Ship handling simulators are deemed to be valuable in rating fairways and are recommended for critical marginal conditions (e.g. minimizing fairway dimensions (see also PIANC WG II-20, 1992; PIANC WG II-30, 1997), although the limits for this kind of application are still uncertain. The BAW is consulted primarily by the WSV for professional advice when it comes to tender procedures for simulation assignments and for verifying the rating methods. Assessments of the ship handling simulation software currently devised for nautical issues led to the conclusion that the mathematical methods of the simulation systems (e.g. regarding the squat and bank effect) relevant to fairway rating do not satisfy the professional demands made by the WSV. In the maritime society, the training of a ship handling is carried out by a ship bridge simulator. The education using the simulator is popular worldwide because we are able to educate the same scenario, and repeat it for a lot of students until they can understand well. Moreover, we can make a scenario for the dangerous conditions and situations that we have never tried on the real vessel. The evaluation of simulator training is subjectively; it is professional subjective evaluation that comes from their experiences. In this paper, we propose a real time evaluation support system using a physiological index as the one of system of simulator systems. The system evaluates mental workload on the real time, and the system supports instructors to monitor student's mental workload during their training. The instructors understand not only their performance but also their mental workload to evaluate the training.

The MV Ever Given accident, which took place in the Suez Canal in March 2021, showed the financial consequences of marine accidents in narrow channels as vessel sizes increase continuously. Fortunately, this incident did not threaten life nor the environment. Nevertheless, it has shown the need for a thorough investigation of large vessel passages through narrow channels and confined waterways. In this study, the utilization of a bridge simulator for risk assessment and determining safety criteria through the Istanbul Strait, which is one of the most critical and difficult waterways to navigate in the world, is given as a case study. In the literature, there are some studies illustrating the navigational difficulties and proposed countermeasures. However, there has been no study conducted to determine the safe passage conditions of large vessels in the Istanbul Strait. Hence, a Full-Mission Ship-Handling Simulator (FMSHS) was used to simulate the passage of large vessels in the Istanbul Strait. Scenarios were prepared and executed together with Strait Maritime Pilots to ensure the realism. After the scenarios were simulated, the outputs of each scenario were analyzed using the Environmental Stress (ES) model to highlight levels of risk that occur during the passage of large vessels, and finally, the necessary measures are recommended to mitigate the risk.
