After breaking into a house he believes is empty, thief Olivier is caught by the owner, Ariane, who turns out to be a dominatrix. Improbably falling for her, Olivier returns periodically, and an impulsive romance blossoms despite Ariane's profession. Soon Olivier becomes more familiar with her work, even joining in on occasion. However, when he discovers that Ariane has a son, he attempts to "fix" her, hoping to give her a better life.

Zo wordt hij geconfronteerd met het dubbelleven van een aantrekkelijke flatbewoonster die een etage lager meesteres is van masochistische client[KA2]ele. Nieuwsgierigheid en een zekere fascinatie doen hem aan haar `mises-en-sc[KA2]ene` deelnemen en hij leert de strikte scheiding van beide levens accepteren van de vrouw van wie hij gaat houden, maar ze blijkt n[KA2]og een (geheim) leven te hebben. Schroeder meende dat dat weinig bekende aspect van de erotiek voldoende interessante filmstof was en vergat daardoor zijn scenario dat geen moment boeit of overtuigt. De klinische, onsensationele presentatie van sadistische praktijken geeft een zekere fascinatie, maar draagt niets bij tot de dramatiek. De broze, meisjesachtige Ogier is een verrassende, maar weinig overtuigende keus voor de rol van meesteres.

It was made in 1976 by Barbet Schroeder, who later went on to a career in America with films including Reversal of Fortune (1990) and Single White Female (1992). In the '60s and '70s, Schroeder was famous for his movies about counter-cultural lifestyles involving drugs, mysticism and sexual experimentation. Maîtresse is his movie about sado-masochism – but its S&M is a strictly formal, organised affair.

Based on an encounter with a real-life dominatrix, Barbet Schroeder's controversial story of a Paris prostitute specialising in bondage and sado-masochism was refused a certificate on its original release. The film features graphic scenes of torture and fetishism which the BBFC in 1976 described as 'miles in excess of anything we have ever passed in this field'. Only released at the time in a handful of club cinemas, in 1981 the film was cut by almost five minutes and finally awarded an X certificate. Although on its release Maitresse was denounced by some critics as sordid and perverted, Schroeder has always regarded it as 'an extremely healthy movie... joyous and life-affirming.'
